When Death Occurs

When a death occurs in your family, you will be faced with many important tasks and decisions. You may not know what to do or where to begin making arrangements. You are not alone. Here is a guide to help you through  some of the steps you will need to take when a death occurs. The funeral directors at WISEMAN FUNERAL HOME are experts and will help coordinate all of the details when you come in for an arrangement conference.
We will gladly accommodate you with funeral arrangements made in the comforts of your own home.

After death has occurred, the following are some questions that may be asked when you call:

  • What is the full name of the deceased?
  • What is the location of the deceased (Hospital, Nursing Facility or Residence)?
  • What is your name, address and phone number?
  • What is the name, address and telephone number of the next of kin?
  • Is there a prearrangement funeral plan? (If yes, what is the plan name or number)
We will then set an appointment time for you to come in to the arrangement office to complete the details of the funeral arrangements. It is always our pleasure to customize your request so that it brings honor to the life that you wish to celebrate. We will ask you to bring in some items and information that will be necessary to complete the arrangements.

These items will include but are not limited to:

  • Clothing for the deceased
  • The deceased birthday, and state of birth
  • The deceased parent’s names, including mother’s maiden name
  • Information about the deceased education.
  • Social security number of the deceased
  • Marital status of the deceased
  • Recent photograph of the deceased
  • Prearrangement paperwork ( If applicable)
  • Cemetery lot information (If applicable)
  1. It will be helpful if you contact your clergy so that we might get an idea on the time and place for the funeral or memorial service. If you have no clergy we can provide one for you.

  2. Notify insurance companies of the death

  3. If the deceased was living alone, notify the utility companies and landlord and tell the post office where to have the mail forwarded.

  4. Your funeral director will prepare the necessary Social Security forms.

Important Information to Remember

If death should occur at a private residence, please call the police and emergency medical personnel immediately before calling the funeral home. The police can often release human remains directly to your funeral home of choice. However, there are certain cases in which the body may need to go to the Medical Examiner's Office so that the cause of death can be determined. This may not be the case if the deceased was in home hospice care. After appropriate officials have been notified just give us a call and we will be right over to assist you.
