On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, after a courageous battle with COPD, Barbara Ann Lynch-Freeman of Gambrills, Maryland entered into eternal life. The daughter of Ruthie and William Lynch , she was born and raised in Washington, DC where she received her early education in the DC Public School System, graduating from Chamberlin Vocational High School in 1965. After 10 years as a secretary she decided to further her education, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Maryland, College Park. After which she completed all requirements, excepted the dissertation, for the PH.D program in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. Instead she excepted a teaching position at Bowie State University where she taught Sociology for 28 years, finally retiring in 2018. She married the love of her life, the late Warren Freeman, who before his death served for seven years as the Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard. The two met when Barbara enlisted in the 1st U.S. WAC Basic Training Battalion in Alexandria, Virginia and was one of a small number of women who were accepted into the D.C. National Guard Officer Candidate School in 1975.Not only was Barbara among the first class of females to enter and complete the program, but upon graduation was recruited to become the School's first female Tactical Officer. She received an Honorable Discharge at the rank of 1LT in January of 1983. Barbara is survived by her son Kevin and his two sons, Ryan and Sean. She also leaves behind two daughters-in-law, Marva and Tiffany, two brothers, Tommy, and his wife Cecelia and William, a third and much beloved brother Ernest and his wife Pat both passed a few years ago, three sisters Kathleen, Hazel, and Susan and her husband Mack White and their super sharp and gregarious granddaughter Sabrina, many other nieces, nephews, two of which, Lamont and Christopher, she took great pride in helping to raise, and many other relatives and great friends. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 4 from 10 am until the time of funeral service at 11 am at Wiseman Funeral Chapel, 7531 Old Alexandria Ferry Road, Clinton, Maryland.
