Nina Joyce Brown was born in Westchester County, New York on October 15, 1932 to William and Mable Crider. Nina was raised in New York City where she attended school.
In 1952, Nina married Tasso Webb and they had one son, Dean Anthony Webb. After divorcing Tasso, Nina later met and married Carl E. Brown, Sr. and they had two sons, Carl E. Brown, Jr. and Michael J. Brown.
The Brown’s moved into Rochdale Village in 1964, Nina soon established herself as a community organizer and protested for the City to build a public library in the community. Nina, or as many students affectionately referred to her as “Mean Ms. Brown,” was able to influence hundreds of students when she worked at P.S. 80 and I.S. 72 in Jamaica, Queens. She was always looking out for the best interest of the students and encouraged them to do their best. After school you could find all the neighborhood children eating snacks or dinner and doing homework at our dining room table. After 30 years, Nina retired from the New York City Board of Education and during her tenure she received numerous citations and certificates of appreciation for her dedication to the students.
A loving mother, model, homemaker, community organizer, school administrator, and grandmother, Nina was also a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, especially over the holidays. For many years there was always a party at the Brown household. She loved to watch soap operas, game shows and westerns in her spare time. She was a dedicated New York Yankees fan and attended many of their baseball games.
In 2002, Nina decided to leave her beloved New York and relocated to Maryland to be with her sons and to welcome the birth of her twin grandchildren; however, she did not severe ties with her numerous friends in New York. While in Maryland, Nina had no problems socializing and meeting new people and forging new friendships. Nina love the Lord and enjoyed attending church services at Cresthill Baptist Church, in Bowie, MD.
While a resident at Crofton Care & Rehabilitation Center, Nina was well known by all and was affectionately referred to as the “mayor.” She made many friends, kept the staff in line and loved and was loved by so many at this facility. She enjoyed church services every Saturday with members from Grace Baptist Church in Bowie, MD.
Nina was predeceased by her loving husband of 30 years, Carl Edward Brown, Sr., as well as by her brother, William Crider. Nina is survived by her son’s Dean A. Webb and his wife Cathy; Carl E. Brown, Jr. and his wife Evelyn; and Michael J. Brown; her three grandchildren, Amanda Webb-Wells and her husband Jonah Wells, Jason E. and Jasmine A. Brown; one surviving nephew William Crider; and one great-grandchild, Knox Wells, who is due to enter this world later this month. In addition to her blood family, Nina or "Ms. Nina" or so many affectionately called her, had an extensive “family” bond with numerous individuals she referred to and loved as her daughters, sons, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She is loved by all that she touched with her special charm.
